Was wir messen
What we measure
Supermarket: the daily price of 23 products in Mercadona's online shop, using the warehouse that serves Palma. Fuel: every day the median of all petrol stations on Mallorca, from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. Electricity: Red Eléctrica's regulated PVPC tariff as a daily average; the Balearic Islands pay the same as the mainland. Water: the average cost per m³ that INE publishes every two years.
Rent and sale prices: asking prices per m² from idealista's monthly reports, entered by hand. Official INE data: the consumer price index by region, the hotel price index, the average rate per occupied room (ADR) and the house price index.
Prices on the ground: coffee, set lunch, sunbeds, drugstore items and more, recorded in person. We show the kind of shop, never its name.
How we calculate
The basket index is the geometric mean (Jevons index) of each product's price change since the first day, which equals 100. There is one basket for residents and one for visitors.
The Mallorca index uses the official Balearic CPI weights. Where we measure ourselves (food, rent, fuel and electricity, about 28.5 % of spending), our data replace the matching part of the official basket; the rest comes from INE's Balearic indices. For electricity and fuel INE only publishes the split for Spain as a whole, which we apply to the Balearic Islands. The latest month is provisional until INE publishes its figures.
We compare prices per kilo or litre, so a shrinking pack is noticed even when the price stays the same. If a product disappears and we replace it, we mark it. For fuel we use the median rather than the average, so a few extreme stations do not distort the figure.
Seasonal prices (hotels, sunbeds, watermelon) are always compared with the same month a year earlier. To compare our food prices with INE's, we set both to 100 in our first month.
Hours of work: we start from the median gross annual wage on the Balearic Islands (Ibestat/INE wage structure survey, latest published year) and carry it forward with the change in wage cost per worker over the last four quarters (quarterly labour cost survey). From the gross wage we subtract the employee's social security contribution (6.5 %) and this year's income tax (IRPF) on the state and Balearic scales, for a single employee without children. Net pay is spread over 2,080 paid hours a year (40 hours a week). The example flat has 50 m² in Palma, at idealista's asking price.
Limits
Mercadona's online prices may differ from its shops, and it is a single chain. idealista shows asking prices, not final prices; what buyers actually pay is measured by INE's house price index. ADR also reflects shifts between hotel categories; the pure price trend is shown by the hotel price index. INE data arrive with a delay of weeks or months. Prices recorded in person are few and meant as a guide. The median wage includes part-time work, and every personal situation pays different tax: the hours of work are a guide, not anyone's actual pay. Mallorcaflation does not replace the official consumer price index; it complements it with more frequent, closer-to-home data.
Updates and corrections
Price barometer: every month, on the day INE publishes the consumer price index, an article puts the Balearic inflation rate next to our measurements for the month. Changes compare the monthly average with the month before when both months have at least 10 days of data; otherwise the last value of the month with that of the month before. From the day after publication the figures no longer change.
Automatic data are updated four times a day, INE data as soon as they are published. If you spot a mistake, write to hello@mallorcaflation.com.
